CCD sensors were once all the rage in digital photography, but they have since been replaced by CMOS technology. Why did the industry end up switching?

Can anyone recommend a good affordable USB camera for use on a telescope? My main requirement is for the camera to support UVC, since I don't want to find myself with a driver-less device in two years ...
