An avalanche closed part of a highway in the borough of Haines, a small town about 90 miles north of Juneau in Alaska's panhandle on Tuesday night — the latest debris slide in the region after days of heavy rain triggered avalanches in Juneau last week.

The National Avalanche Center, operated by the U.S. Forest Service, reports five people have been killed so far this winter season. The tally includes the fatalities in Washington, as well as two in California on Dec. 26 and Jan. 5, and one in Wyoming on Dec. 20.

An avalanche near La Plagne resort in south-eastern France has killed a British man believed to be in his 50s.

Avalanches around the world have caused multiple deaths, injuries and several close calls over the past few weeks. In the United States, two people were killed in Washington state after being caught in an avalanche while backcountry snowmobiling.

A Utah man was found dead after being caught in an avalanche Sunday afternoon in Lincoln County, Wyoming, authorities said.

Entering the new year the Colorado Avalanche were blessed with good health but that has since deteriorated through a tough southeast road trip at the beginning of January and an overall busier schedule leading to some notable injuries.
