New cold front coming to area after temps tie record lows Jan. 16
On the morning of Jan. 16, according to the weather service, Fort Pierce tied a record low temperature of 32 degrees, last set in 1978. Vero Beach reached a low temperature of 34 degrees. The record low for Jan. 16 in Vero Beach is 31 degrees, said meteorologist Megan Tollefsen. It’s normally in the lower 50s this time of the year.
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials said iguanas can become either immobilized or sluggish when temperatures hit between 40 and 50 degrees. Longer cold snaps with overcast skies that prevent basking for warmth can be deadly as the paralyzed iguanas become easy prey to vultures, bobcats and coyotes.
